Columbus-The North American Gay Volleyball Association championships are taking place this weekend at the Celeste Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds.
CAVE, the Columbus Alternative Volleyball Enthusiasts, is the host organizing commitee for the tournament, and is headed by Stonewall Columbus' new executive director, Jeff Redfield. Nearly 100 teams from all over North America will be competing in four divisions of play.
Tournament action begins at the Celeste Center on Friday morning, May 15, and concludes on Sunday, May 17 with an awards reception and banquet at the Adams Mark Hotel.
"This is the first time Columbus has hosted a national or international gay sports championship and we're excited to show off our city," Redfield said. “For many, this will be the first time they see and experience our exciting city and we hope they will go back and tell others."
The 1998 championships are sponsored in part by Bud Light/Columbus Distributing Company, Volleyball One, Union Station Cafe and the Columbus Adams Mark Hotel. Fore more information, call 216-299-7764. Bowlers have world tournament
Cleveland-Two years of planning and anticipation by local organizers will come to fruition this Memorial Day weekend as Cleveland hosts IGBO '98, the 18th annual tournament of the International Gay and Lesbian Bowling Organization.
Over 500 men and women from 30 states, three Canadian provinces, and from as far away as Australia and New Zealand are expected to attend, making this the second largest gay and lesbian sporting event in the world (the Gay Games, in Amsterdam later this year, is first).
The weekend begins with a registration party for bowlers and guests on Friday evening, May 22, at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. Bowling events begin at 9 am on Saturday, May 23, at Palisades Palace in Wickliffe, and will continue through Sunday, May 24 at 10 am.
Each participant will bowl a total of nine games over the weekend, three games each in singles, doubles, and team events. To level the playing field, bowlers are given a handicap based on their established averages.
Prize money and trophies will be awarded to an established percentage of the top scorers. Special awards will be given for high game, high series, and all events total. Bowlers may also choose to enter an optional scratch division in which prize money is awarded based on actual scores.
The bowling center will be closed to the general public, but citizens and friends of the Cleveland gay and lesbian community are invited to come and watch the competition.

Tales of the City premieres
Columbus is one of four lucky cities chosen to host a sneak preview of the Peabody-award winning series, Armistead Maupin's More Tales of the City. The screening will be held at 7:00 pm on May 27 in the ballroom at the Westin Great Southern, and is being presented by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Showtime, Coaxial Communications, and Out on Main.

The new mini-series is based on the second of Maupin's six Tales books, set in San Francisco in the 1970s and early 80s. This series begins only six weeks after the first series ended. Six new episodes will make their debut on Showtime beginning June 7. For tickets, call GLAAD at 800-429-6334.

Living Room has ninth birthday
Cleveland-The Living Room, a drop-in center and program of the Lesbian and Gay Community Center, has been around since 1989 helping people with HIV and AIDS enjoy healthier and more productive lives.
To celebrate their nine years of community service, the Living Room will host their annual open house and barbecue on Saturday, May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will take place at the drop-in center at 1410 West 29th St., and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 216-522-1998.
Forum focuses on gay families
Columbus-The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, in conjunction with the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Stonewall Columbus, will host a town meeting on May 19 at 7:30 pm at the Renaissance Room at Out on Main, 122 E. Main St. in Columbus.
NGLTF and NCLR executive directors Kerry Lobel and Kate Kendall will join a panel of local experts on gay, lesbian, bi-
sexual and transgender issues, and participate in a discussion about adoption, custody, domestic partnership and marriage.
The event is part of NGLTF's "Celebrating Our Families" national tour, which kicked off at the University of Toledo on March 26.
The organization has plans for town meetings in fifteen cities to help local communi"ties organize to stem the rising tide of rightwing attacks on gay and lesbian families.
According to Stonewall Columbus, the recent vehement opposition to a Columbus City School Board anti-harrasment policy that included sexual orientation was an indication of how much education is still needed in the city.
Representatives from the Liston Legal Rights Campaign, Fishman and Fey, New Roots Adoption, Specialized Alternatives for Youth and the Gay and Lesbian Parents Group of Central Ohio will also be on the panel.
The meeting is free and open to the public, but seating is limited, so Stonewall Columbus is asking people to RSVP to 614299-7764.
